Solute, Solvent, Solution

These are vocabulary you HAVE to memorize and know!

Solute: The thing being dissolved. Can be solid, gas or liquid. Example: Salt in seawater, fizzy gas (CO2) in soft drinks

Solvent: The liquid that dissolves the solute. Must be a liquid. Example: Salt in seawater

Solution: The mixture of solvent and solute. Solvent and solute added together forms the solution. Must be a liquid!

Example: Seawater is the mixture of salt and water

Soluble: Can be dissolved

Example: Sugar in a cup of coffee

Insoluble: Can't be dissolved

Example: Sand in water

Concentrated: Lots of solute compared to solvent

Diluted: Lots of solvent compared to solute

(Not to be confused with strength of an acid!)
